Leopold Bros. in Denver, Colorado is one of the most technically ambitious craft distilleries in America — founded by brothers Todd and Scott Leopold, who have dedicated themselves to reviving historic American whiskey styles with obsessive attention to detail. Their Maryland Style Rye is a painstaking recreation of the pre-Prohibition Maryland rye tradition, a style that was once distinct from Pennsylvania and Kentucky rye but nearly vanished after Prohibition.
Using a three-chamber still — a historic piece of equipment that Leopold Bros. had custom-built — and a mash bill of malted rye, corn, and malted barley, this expression captures the softer, more approachable character that defined Maryland rye before it disappeared from the American whiskey landscape.
