Review Note: This tasting was conducted blind, with the bottle identity revealed after our notes were complete.
Nose
The nose opens with classic whiskey notes of vanilla, caramel, sweet oak, light cinnamon, and sweet leather. As it develops, anise, slight black pepper, dark sugars, toffee, roasted sugar, and barrel char begin to show. There is also a faint floral note sitting way in the background.
Overall, the nose is rich, classic, and inviting, with enough oak, spice, and darker sweetness to suggest good maturity.
Palate
The palate follows the nose very well. It starts sweet and viscous, bringing black pepper, cinnamon candy, vanilla bean, caramel, honey, tobacco, and anise. As it sits on the palate, the sweet oak and barrel char build, giving way to burnt sugar, caramel, and roasted sweetness.
On later sips, the whiskey becomes more concentrated. Black pepper, hot cinnamon candy, sweet oak, burnt sugar, black licorice, and anise become more noticeable. There is also some black cherry, honey, powdered dark chocolate, and a faint craft note that comes across like uncooked pastry with cinnamon. That note is subtle and pleasant rather than distracting.
As it continues to open, the palate moves into marshmallow, toasted sweet oak, vanilla bean, caramel, butterscotch, leather, sweet tobacco, and chewy caramel. The proof shows up more with time, with cinnamon red hot candy and black pepper adding heat, but the sweetness keeps it approachable and easy to drink.
Finish
The finish is long, sweet, and coating. Sweet oak, caramel, tobacco, anise, barrel char, black pepper, burnt sugar, and leather all linger. It stays on the palate for a good while and leaves behind a rich, classic finish with enough spice and darker sweetness to keep it interesting.
Overall
Middle West Oloroso Wheat is unique whiskey done right. It delivers sweetness, oak, spice, viscosity, and richness in a way that feels both approachable and sophisticated. The proof feels somewhere around the 100–110 range, though at times it drinks a little bigger because of the spice and concentration.
This is the kind of whiskey that should appeal to a wide range of drinkers. It is sweet and easy to enjoy, but the tobacco, leather, anise, barrel char, and dark sugar notes give it enough structure for someone looking for more depth.
